Three Generations, One Chisel

For over a century, the carvers of Zhoushan Village in Suzhou have practised he-diao — the carving of complete worlds onto pits no larger than a thumbnail. Our atelier carries this intangible cultural heritage forward with museum-grade discipline: natural pits, hand-forged tools, and the most precious material of all — time.

01

Selecting the Pit

Every pit is hand-picked from mature olive groves and aged for years, chosen for density, symmetry and grain — fewer than one in a hundred is worthy of the chisel.

02

Sketching

The composition is drawn directly onto a pit barely three centimetres long, balanced with calipers until figure and emptiness agree.

03

Carving

Two dozen micro-chisels, forged by the carver himself, work in reliefs measured in tenths of a millimetre. A single figure can demand three hundred hours.

04

Finishing

The surface is burnished patiently with bamboo and boar bristle until the pit's natural oils rise — an amber lustre no lacquer can imitate.

The pit is small; the world it holds is not.

Care & Wisdom

Maintenance & FAQ

Five Rules of Care

A well-kept carving deepens in colour for decades. Five habits are all it takes.

01
Keep it dry

Brief contact with water is tolerable; soaking is not. If caught in rain, pat dry and air-rest.

02
Oil, lightly

A trace of neutral oil — olive or jojoba — every two to three months nourishes the pit and deepens its patina.

03
Brush, gently

A soft dry brush lifts dust from the deepest relief. Never use chemicals or metal polish.

04
Store with care

Rest in the included cloth pouch, away from radiators, air-conditioning vents and strong sunlight.

05
Wear it often

Skin contact is the finest finish of all — years of wear turn the pit a translucent amber.

Common Questions

Everything collectors usually ask before their first piece.

Are the pieces waterproof?

Olive pits are naturally dense and oily, and our carvings tolerate brief contact with water — but they are not waterproof. Do not soak them, wear them in the shower or sauna, or clean them in an ultrasonic bath. If a piece gets wet, pat it dry and let it rest in the open air, away from direct heat.

How should I care for my carving over time?

Brush dust from the crevices with a soft, dry brush. Every two to three months, apply a trace of neutral oil with a fingertip, let it absorb, then buff with a soft cloth. Regular wearing builds a warm amber patina — this is the piece ageing beautifully, not damage.

Do you take custom commissions?

Yes. Portrait busts, zodiac animals, Buddhist figures, commemorative pieces — most subjects can be carved. Commissions take four to eight weeks and begin with a 50% deposit. Send a description or reference image through the inquiry form and we will reply with a sketch and quotation.

How is shipping handled?

Every piece ships worldwide by EMS, DHL or FedEx, fully insured, with tracking and an export certificate. Packaging is custom-fitted and climate-buffered. Delivery typically takes five to ten business days, and we handle all customs paperwork.

Is each piece truly unique?

Yes — completely. Every carving is made from a natural olive pit; no two pits, and no two compositions, are alike. Each piece arrives with a certificate of authenticity signed by the carver, stating the piece number, subject and date of completion.

Do you offer wholesale or gallery partnerships?

We do. For galleries, boutiques and collectors' shops we offer wholesale pricing, a seasonal line sheet and private-label options. Mention “WHOLESALE” in your message and our partnership desk will reply within one business day.
